Live from Burning Man on what we all have in common
Wednesday Sep 12, 2018
Wednesday Sep 12, 2018
I’m not exactly sure how this happened so quickly, but here we are, at the one year anniversary of Out of Line. 52 weeks of conversation with some of the most honest + inspiring folks out there. For the last episode of the year, I decided to do something a little different.. I took a handheld recorder with me to my fourth Burning Man--which is an annual event in northwest Nevada. For one week, 70,000 people gather in one space to create a temporary city, including camps, and about 300 pieces of art. Burning Man is an experiment in community and art, influenced by ten main principles: "radical" inclusion, self-reliance, and self-expression, as well as community cooperation, civic responsibility, gifting, decommodification, participation, immediacy, and leaving no trace. One of my favorite parts about Out of Line has been the final question I ask each guest -- what do you have in common with every human on planet earth? What does humanity have in common? And so, I took my tiny recorder around Burning Man with me, and asked this same question to some of the people I encountered there. Before I play what I heard, I’ll add a ‘thank you’ for journeying through this year with me. Your DMs and emails and notes and iTunes reviews have carried me and kept me going. I do this for you, so that you feel empowered to ask anything, and, so that you have a reminder of the range of unseen battles each of us may be facing at any given time. Thank you for being here.
I’m going to be taking a mini break now. I want to regroup, get some feedback from you, and come back for year 2 even better and stronger. Make sure you subscribe, and follow @outoflinepodcast on Instagram to find out when the feedback questionnaire is up, and, when the new season launches, too. I’ve already started recording the new episodes, and I can tell you, things are gonna get juicy. For now, Caroline signing off with the reminder to put it in your mouth, but don’t swallow...

Jessie McLaughlin on OCD and therapy
Wednesday Aug 29, 2018
Wednesday Aug 29, 2018
Jessie McLaughlin is a southern native now living in Los Angeles. After growing up in North Carolina, and singing classically through college, Jessie married Rhett, and they had two boys. 7 years ago, Jessie and her family moved to LA for her husband's YouTube career, and she has a deep love for her new home town. Now, Jessie is in a new season of life after transitioning out of being a homeschooling mom, and is exploring her love of interior design on her blog and Instagram channel, A Nomad at Home. Jessie is a dear friend of mine, and was kind enough to allow me to record our chat on obsessive compulsive disorder, and on her experience with therapy.

Jamie Lee Finch on owning your sexuality
Wednesday Aug 22, 2018
Wednesday Aug 22, 2018
Jamie Lee Finch is an intuitive healer, sex witch, poet and relationship guide between humans and their bodies. She believes our bodies have a language, and that that language is our mother tongue. Trauma, she says, in any form -- including toxic experiences with fundamentalist religious belief -- is responsible for breaking down our ability to communicate successfully with our bodies; and any sort of illness or imbalance, dysfunction or disease is our bodies’ frustrated attempts to connect with and communicate to us. The work that Jamie does is in reassociating people with their bodies, the language their body is speaking, and the voice their body is speaking with; it is deep reconciliation healing work on a mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical level. Jamie is based in Nashville, Tennessee, and her practice is fully booked until 2019. Clearly, there’s a demand for this type of reconnection with our bodies. I was stoked to chat with Jamie over Skype, where we discussed owning your sexuality, and a bit on purity culture, too.

Alua Arthur is the founder of Going with Grace. She is a death doula, life lover and end of life planner. She's a former attorney, jewelry addict, bike enthusiast, and a developing nation aficionado. Shavonda Gardner is a blogger and interior designer who lives with her wife and children in Sacramento, California. Her blog, SG Style, is all about small-space living and BoHo vibes. Her design philosophy? Just because you live small doesn’t mean you can’t have big style! Shavonda believes great design is achieved when we let go of the rules, and shift our focus to creating spaces that make us feel amazing… This was the first time I'd ever gotten to chat with Shavonda, and we recorded over Skype while we talked about her time in the Military (the Air Force), and important thoughts on Veterans, too.
